Rail or road from Mundra: comparing inland transport
When rail beats road for cargo leaving Mundra, and how to compare both on a true door-to-door basis.
Once cargo clears at Mundra, it still has to reach the factory or the inland depot. Rail and road each have a place, and the cheaper option on paper is not always the cheaper option door to door.
When rail usually wins
- Long distances, as a rough guide around 500 km and more
- Regular container volumes, or full rakes of bulk cargo
- Destinations with an inland container depot or rail siding nearby
When road usually wins
- Short and medium distances within Gujarat and neighbouring states
- Urgent loads that cannot wait for a train slot
- Delivery to sites with no rail access nearby
- Over-dimensional cargo that needs a dedicated route
Compare door to door
A fair comparison adds every leg of the rail option:
- Trucking from the terminal or CFS to the rail terminal
- Terminal handling at the origin
- The rail freight itself
- Handling at the destination depot
- Last-mile trucking to your premises
Road transport is usually one price from gate to gate, so put both options on the same basis before choosing.
Clearing inland
Where the documents and customs procedure allow, import containers can move under bond to an inland depot and be cleared there, closer to the buyer. It can simplify delivery but needs to be planned before the cargo is shipped.
Combine them
Many moves use both: rail for the long haul and trucks for the first and last mile. The right mix depends on volume, distance and how quickly the cargo is needed.
