Kandla vs Mundra: which port suits your cargo?

Bulk, break-bulk, containers or project cargo: how draft, berths, rail links and storage decide the better gateway for each shipment.

Kandla and Mundra sit a short drive apart on the Gulf of Kutch, yet they suit very different cargo. Choosing the right one for each shipment is one of the simplest ways to save time at the berth and money on the way inland.

Two ports, two strengths

Deendayal Port, Kandla is a major port administered by the Deendayal Port Authority. It sits on a tidal creek, with an out-port at Tuna Tekra, and is built around bulk: coal, fertiliser, salt, grains, timber, steel, liquid bulk and project cargo. Open storage beside the berths and an experienced labour pool make it the natural home for bulk receivers in Kutch and beyond.

Mundra Port, operated by Adani Ports and SEZ, is a deep-water commercial port on the open coast. It is best known for its container terminals and frequent mainline and feeder services, and it also handles bulk, liquid and multipurpose cargo. Rail links into North and Central India make it a strong choice for containers bound for inland depots.

What really decides it

  • Vessel size and draft: Kandla's creek and tides set limits that Mundra's deeper water does not. Larger bulk carriers sometimes lighten at anchorage before berthing at Kandla.
  • Berth availability: a free berth this week can be worth more than a slightly cheaper port next week.
  • Inland leg: trucking from the port to your plant, or rail to an inland depot, is often the biggest cost after freight.
  • Clearance and storage: where your cargo waits for customs and how fast it can be called off matters as much as the berth.

Compare total landed cost, not port charges

Port dues are only one line of the bill. A fair comparison adds handling, storage, demurrage risk, customs time and the inland transport to your gate. The port with the lowest tariff is not always the cheapest way to land your cargo.
