ODC cargo road permits in Gujarat

Route surveys, state permits and escorts: what it takes to move over-dimensional cargo out of Kandla and Mundra by road.

Over-dimensional cargo (ODC) such as transformers, heavy machinery and wind components often lands at Kandla or Mundra and then faces its hardest leg: the road to site. Moving it safely and legally takes planning that starts well before the vessel arrives.

What makes cargo ODC

Cargo becomes over-dimensional when its width, height, length or weight goes beyond normal road limits. Even a single oversized unit changes the vehicle, the route, the permits and the timing of the move.

The route survey

Before any permit is applied for, the route is surveyed end to end. The survey checks:

  • Bridges and culverts, and whether they can take the load
  • Overhead power lines, signboards and other height limits
  • Turning radii at junctions, toll plazas and site entrances
  • Road surfaces and any works in progress along the way

Permits and escorts

Permits are needed from the road authorities of each state the cargo will cross, and conditions vary. Some moves need police escort, pilot vehicles or night-only movement. Building time for approvals into the project schedule avoids cargo waiting at the port.

Loading and lashing

  1. Choose the right trailer, such as a low-bed or hydraulic axle trailer, for the weight and dimensions.
  2. Plan the lift with a crane rated for the load at the required radius.
  3. Lash and secure the cargo to the trailer, and check it at planned stops.

On the road

ODC convoys move slowly and to a planned schedule, with escort vehicles managing traffic at critical points. Delivery is timed with the site's unloading crane, so the trailer does not wait at the gate.
