Why cargo moves through Kandla

Deendayal Port, run by the Deendayal Port Authority and long known as Kandla Port, is one of India's major ports and a key gateway on the Gulf of Kutch for North and West India. It is built around bulk: dry bulk such as coal, fertiliser, salt and grains, break-bulk such as steel and timber, liquid bulk, and project cargo. Large open storage areas next to the berths, an experienced labour pool and road links to the industrial belt around Gandhidham and Anjar make it the natural choice for many bulk importers and exporters.

Our services at Kandla

  • Vessel agency: full, husbandry and protective agency, with a PDA within 4 working hours and a 24/7 agency line.
  • Stevedoring: planned discharge and loading at berth or at anchorage, with up to 12,000 t a day on coal and minerals on geared vessels.
  • Customs clearance: Bill of Entry and Shipping Bill filed and followed through by our team, who attend examinations in person.
  • Cranes and forklifts: hydras, a 50 t mobile crane and forklifts for quay and yard work.
  • Warehousing and storage: covered and open storage in Gandhidham, a short drive from the berths.
  • Road and rail haulage: trucks, tippers and ODC trailers from the quay, and rake bookings for bulk.

Working Kandla well

Kandla sits on a tidal creek, so timing matters. Getting a vessel alongside on the right tide can save days, and draft limits decide whether a larger vessel lightens at anchorage first. We plan berthing, tide windows and any anchorage operations before the vessel arrives, so the call is shaped around the port rather than surprised by it.

Berth or anchorage?

When berths are busy or the draft is tight, cargo can be worked at anchorage into barges and landed at the jetties. It changes cost, speed and equipment, so we price both options and advise which suits the vessel and the cargo.

The monsoon

The south-west monsoon, roughly June to September, brings rain and swell. Moisture-sensitive cargo such as fertiliser, sugar and grains cannot be worked in rain, so we plan covered trucks, tarpaulins and covered storage, and log every stoppage in the statement of facts as it happens.

Tuna Tekra

Tuna Tekra is Kandla's out-port for dry-bulk operations. Our team works vessels there as well as at the main Kandla berths, with the same agency, stevedoring and evacuation plan.

Getting cargo out of Kandla

Most delays at Kandla happen after discharge, when cargo waits on the quay for trucks or clearance. We schedule trucks shift by shift against the discharge rate, move overflow into storage in Gandhidham, and line up customs so deliveries start as soon as cargo is cleared. For long distances, bulk rakes can take cargo inland by rail.

Kandla port FAQs

Do you work at Tuna Tekra as well as the main Kandla berths?

Yes. Our Gandhidham team works vessels at both, under the same agency and stevedoring plan.

Can you deliver cargo straight from the vessel to our trucks at Kandla?

Yes. Direct delivery is often the cheapest option. We coordinate it with your transporter or ours, and move overflow into storage.

Is Kandla or Mundra better for my cargo?

For dry bulk and break-bulk, usually Kandla. For regular container lanes, usually Mundra. We compare both before you fix the vessel.
