FCL vs LCL from Gujarat ports

When a full container pays for itself, what LCL really costs in time, and how to compare both on equal terms.

Small exporters in Gujarat often face the same question: book a full container, or share one? The right answer depends on volume, timing and how the cargo handles being moved more than once.

How each option works

FCL (full container load) means you book a whole 20' or 40' container. It is stuffed for you alone, sealed and stays sealed until it reaches the consignee.

LCL (less than container load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers. It is consolidated at a container freight station before sailing and separated again at destination.

When FCL pays for itself

As a rule of thumb, once LCL charges for your cargo approach the cost of a full 20' container, often somewhere around 13 to 15 cubic metres, FCL becomes the better choice. It is usually faster, with fewer handling steps and less risk of damage.

What LCL really costs

  • Time: consolidation and deconsolidation add days at both ends.
  • Handling: cargo is moved more often, so packaging must be stronger.
  • Extra charges: CFS handling and destination fees can make a cheap rate less cheap.

Mundra or Kandla?

Most containerised cargo from Gujarat moves through Mundra, with its frequent sailings and container rail inland. Kandla also handles containers, and can make sense for some lanes and inland origins.
